BV is caused by gardnerella which is a bacteria that is present even in healthy vaginal flora. BV occurs when gardnerella overgrows the rest of the normal flora. this can be due to a shift in hormones or sometimes sexually transmitted.

it is characterized by a thin grey discharge and a very unpleasant fishy odor. itching and burning can occur as well as irratation.

BV doesn’t put you at risk for HPV. having sexual contact with someone that has HPV is would put you at risk.

The cause of BV (bacterial vaginosis) is a shift in the acidity of the vagina that allows bacteria to grow that are normally held in check my the slightly acidic environment of the vagina. For some women intercourse seems to increase the risk of this because the ejaculate changes the acidity of the vagina but it is not a sexually transmitted disease. It does not put you at risk for hpv which is a sexually transmitted infection.
